Yi Sun perceives, collects, and reimagines our daily encounters. His work manifests as interactive objects that intervene in experiential and cognitive systems—moving triangle barricades pushed by viewers, strobing human-machine test interfaces posing recognition tasks, redundant armrests rendering public benches dysfunctional, or a utility cart immobilized by its elongated handle that draws a diagonal line in the space… These altered situations test the assumed experiential logic embedded in designed environments that we are immersed in, revealing their functional paradoxes.

The subtly altered situations demand more than formal, symbolic, or representational interpretation—they call for contextual, multimodal, and generative engagement with the material in front of them. Through direct interaction with those utilitarian objects, insights emerge organically—about how space is organized, allocated, and withheld, how we are positioned, sorted, or excluded. By calibrating interventions to each site's specific conditions, Yi Sun transfers discovery to his audience: it is through their attempts to use, identify, or occupy that the governing logic becomes palpable—along with how it collapses.

His pieces adopt the visual language of the systems they examine—industrial readymades, municipal infrastructure, institutional interfaces, utilitarian color schemes. The aesthetic is deliberately neutral, understated, almost bureaucratic. Such methodology obscures the artist’s personal disposition and allows contradictions to emerge as if self-generated. The tone is clinical, adjustments minimal but precise. Rather than critiquing the systems, the work tests them by pursuing their own logic faithfully, until it produces impasse. These become elegant failures—an archaeology of the mundane templates through which control, utility, and categorization quietly operate.
