"Stay absent, stay reticent. Art cannot be resolved."
Yi Sun perceives, collects, and reimagines everyday encounters. His work manifests as interactive objects that intervene in experiential and cognitive systems—moving triangle barricades pushed by viewers, strobing human-machine test interfaces posing recognition tasks, redundant armrests rendering public benches dysfunctional, or a utility cart immobilized by its elongated handle that draws a diagonal line through space. These altered situations test the assumed logic embedded in designed environments, revealing their functional paradoxes.
Through direct interaction with these utilitarian objects, viewers attempt to use, identify, or occupy them. Yet the encounter does not necessarily resolve into a stable interpretation. An object may remain recognizable while ceasing to behave as expected; a familiar spatial condition may continue to appear functional while quietly resisting the body that enters it. The work occupies this interval between recognition and resolution, where bodily experience precedes the attempt to explain it. By calibrating interventions to the specific conditions of each object and site, these situations allow their underlying logic to become palpable precisely as it begins to fail.
His works adopt the visual language of the systems they examine—industrial readymades, municipal infrastructure, institutional interfaces, and utilitarian color schemes. The aesthetic is deliberately neutral, understated, almost bureaucratic. Personal expression is withheld so that contradictions can appear as if generated by the objects and systems themselves. The tone is clinical, the adjustments minimal but precise. Rather than positioning themselves outside these systems to critique them, the works follow their existing logic until it produces an impasse. They neither offer an alternative nor insist on a conclusion. What remains are elegant failures: objects and situations that appear almost functional, remain immediately present, yet resist complete resolution.
